Summary
[edit]DescriptionCapitoline Hill, Rome (2284060274).jpg |
Pope Paul III ordered Michelangelo to draw up plans for a dramatic makeover of the Capitoline Hill. The scheme involved a trapezoid-shaped piazza and remodeling of the existing buildings - Palazzo dei Conservatori and Palazzo Senatorio. Michelangelo's design included a new building - the Palazzo Nuovo - that would thematically link the other two structures. With his design, Michelangelo effectively shiftedthe orientation of Rome's civic center to the west: away from the Roman Forum toward the Vatican. Palazzo dei Conservatori and Palazzo Nuovo constitute the Capitoline Museums, the oldest existing public collection in the world, begun by Pope Sixtus IV in 1471. |
