Capital controversy As with the pyramids at the Louvre, or the new parliament building in Edinburgh, design changes to beloved “public” buildings often inspire angst. Ottawa’s Chateau Laurier is getting a large addition at the rear of the hotel - a new wing - and it is fair to say that it is attracting a great deal of controversy here in the city and across Canada. While the addition is contemporary in nature and quite interesting, it will radically - and permanently - alter the back architecture of this beautiful heritage hotel (my image shows the back of the hotel). Pictures of the addition (just approved by city council) can be seen at the CBC links below. Personally, I enjoy contemporary architecture, I love Pei’s pyramids, and I think the Scottish parliament is beautiful. I can’t, however, imagine that this addition will be a positive enhancement to the beautiful Chateau Laurier or Major’s Hill Park, the park that it backs onto.
