| Description |
This distinctive building has dominated the skyline of Western Edinburgh, Scotland since 1925. It sits close to the Edinburgh-Glasgow railway line and not far from Murrayfield International Rugby Ground. It's a familiar sight to commuters and sports fans. Jenners Department Store, in the centre of the city, was well known as an upmarket place to shop and traded as such from 1838 until 2005. It's still there, under new ownership, but many say it's a shadow of it's former elegant self. Their "Depository", or storage, was located in the suburbs of the city. Today the Depository is called Edinburgh Self Storage and Jenners is now part of the "House of Fraser" Group. This building is iconic and a landmark and sits prominently beside low-rise housing. The Depository is classed as a "Listed building" and that means that there are strong restrictions on any alterations being made to the fabric of the building. In particular the outward appearance must not be changed. |
