Summary
[edit]DescriptionCapital 05.jpg |
English: Notable among the materials on display are the famous figured capitals that were brought to light in the frigidarium of the Baths. Two of them, with figures of deities on the four sides, formed a pair that decorated the passage from the frigidarium to the natatio, on the central axis and in the focal point of the whole building. The two capitals rested on refined columns of red porphyry, the most expensive "marble" of the Romans, quarried in the eastern Egyptian desert on Gebel Dokhan.
Fortuna is also represented on the capital depicting Bacchus. She is unmistakably characterised by her attributes; the cornucopia in her left arm and the steering oar resting on the globe. |
