s stretches of the GreatMarshes, which in old times supplied largegatherings of salt hay. The Brewsters and thenorthern Dennises stand within easy distancesof the north shore on the route which mustalways have been traced in going down theCape from Plymouth or Boston. The compelling condition of concentrationat Woods Hole is its harborage. Always opento whalers and fishermen, it is the naturalcalling point between New Bedford and theouter islands, and in these days of the railwayand the motor car, it transfers a multitudebetween land and sea during the summer pe-riod, and has charms of its own, waters, pass-ing ships, the views of the Vineyard shore, andbackgrounds of glorious hill and forest. Across these hills and on the other side ofthe forest is Falmouth. The early settlerslanding between Oyster and Fresh Ponds,went about a mile back from the shore andbuilt their permanent homes on the fertileplain at the eastern base of the moraine.
