Notes | red nursing cape with service ribbons - 14-15 Star, BWM, Victory and oak leaf m-i-d emblem Part of Australian Army Nursing Service uniform belonging to 22-52 Staff Nurse Ellen Bennett Brown, ARRC, WW1 New Zealander Ellen Bennett Brown, later Mrs Ellen Manson, volunteered to nurse overseas and joined the Australian Army Nursing Service in Egypt, where she nursed Australian and New Zealand wounded of the Gallipoli Campaign. She later served in France and on the hospital ships returning wounded to Australia. Ellen was awarded the Associate Royal Red Cross (ARRC) Medal, and was mentioned in despatches. Post-war she was matron at the Hamner Hospital, See MS collections, MS 826 “A cable was received on 25 March 1915 from the Australian Government asking for twelve New Zealand nurses, two sisters and ten Staff Nurses who could be ready to sail for Melbourne on 31 March 1915… The nurses selected for service with the Australian Army Nurses - (included) Helen Bennett Brown (22-52) Dunedin…" page 23-24 New Zealand Military Nursing by Sherayl Kendall and David Corbett, 1990 | |||||||||||||||||||||||
