Notes Lieutenant Colonel William Robert Lang, OBE, MC, VD (23 May 1890 – 27 October 1970) Joined Mounted Rifle (Territorial Unit) 1908 and rose to 2nd Lieut. in 1915. Embarked with 9th Reinforcements to Egypt 1916 as 2nd Lieut. in Otago Mounted Rifles (service number 9-1884), transferred to Auckland Infantry during changes made to the NZEF at that time. Many Mounted Riflemen were transferred at the time to build up the New Zealand Division to go to France at full strength. He was Lieutenant with the 15th North Auckland Coy at Messines and Passchendaele. Promoted to Captain and awarded Military Cross after Passchendaele action. Gazette of the time records his being the only Officer left in the Coy and succeeded in getting to the Coy’s objectives. Had only 4 month’s away from his Unit in the time it was in France (wounded twice).Was Company CO at end of War and went with the Army of Occupation to the Cologne area. When Territorial Units reformed after the War, he became Captain in North Auckland Mounted Rifles and in 1934 was appointed Commanding Officer of this Regiment (Lieutenant Colonel was his highest substantial rank). Was posted to the Reserve of Officers in 1937 when Mounted Rifle Regiments in NMD (Northern Military District) disbanded and one of LAFV (Land Army Force Volunteers.) regiment formed in their place. Although not required for Overseas Service in WWII, he became involved in Home Defence and was called up to command No 1 IMR Squadron 10 Jan 1942. He ceased mobilised service July 1943 as Commander of Zone 3A when the war threat had receded from NZ.
