Description

To celebrate International Archives Day 2016, we asked a representative from our offices to explain their role & select their favourite record. You can see the selections on our Flickr account and check our Twitter account for further International Archives Day celebrations. For more information on International Archives Day check out the International Council on Archives website www.ica.org/en/about-international-archives-day

My name is Vivienne Cuff, from Archives New Zealand's Dunedin Regional Office. I have worked at Archives since 2000. My prime responsibility is Government Loans – processing requests from government departments to temporarily borrow archives from us. I also do reference enquiries, arrangement and description and appraisal. Before Archives, I worked at the National Library New Zealand in a number of roles.

In early 1865, there were several fires in the Octagon and Princes Street. Some notable buildings were lost such as the Bank of Otago, Exchange Hotel, Paris and London Restaurant, Fargie’s, the first Presbyterian Church, etc. The citizens of Dunedin raised £600, by public subscription, to thank the Brigade for their work during these fires. The Testimonial was presented to them at a ceremony at the Engine House.

The Testimonial is a coloured lithograph. I found a newspaper article on Paperspast www.paperspast.natlib.govt.nz that said it had a guilded [gilded] frame and was on highly finished paper. The dimensions are: 470 x 703mm.

I chose it because of its fragility, rarity and age. I didn’t know it existed and found it whilst researching items for an exhibition on Dunedin buildings in 2015.

Please forgive the look of the image, the Testimonial is in need of conservation treatment. The image of the Testimonial is taken from a scanned black and white negative.
