Description

Cantharellula umbonata (Fr.) Singer

Location: Forest near Elgin Street, Pembroke, Ontario, Canada

Observation Notes: These little grey/violet guys sprang up all over the place in cushions of moss within a certain region a few tens of meters in radius in mixed woods.
They showed up ONLY in moss.
When young, they have little conical heads sticking up out of the moss, from as little as a couple mm to more than half a cm wide, and are a few cm tall — but much of that height is hidden in the moss.
When older, the cap opens out to maybe 1cm wide and after a bit falls (or is chewed) off.
If the sixth photo is of the same species, which I’m not 100% sure of, the cap eventually becomes greyer and depressed-centered.
The first photo is a closeup of the twelfth. Photos 2 through 10 are from the 7th; the rest are from the 10th. The last two show an uprooted one. It’s very tricky to get decent photos of such small subjects; they often overexpose or underexpose, and focus is a problem. The last two have problems, in particular, but they do give an indication of how long the stem really is!
On the 7th I found other mushrooms (obs. 11027 and obs. 11028) in the moss here and there; on the 10th, only these grey/violet/blue guys and not nearly as many of them.
On the 18th, though none of these had survived a new crop had grown (obs. 11336) and other mushrooms had appeared (obs. 11333, which looks like it might be the same species as obs. 11028, obs. 11334, and 11337, which looks like it might be the same species as obs. 11027).
