Summary

[edit]
Description

The middle square panels depict Pentecost, Resurrection, and Crucifixion. They are supported by semi circular scenes from the Old Testament, namely, from bottom: Moses striking the rock (relates to wounding of Christ's side), Offering of Isaac, The Passover & Lamb sacrifice, The Grapes of Eshcol with 2 spies, ("One refuses to look back at the cluster, the other thirsts to see it"), The Entombment, Joseph in the pit, Samson and Delilah (in bed), Jonah & Whale, Daniel in Babylon (surrounded by walled pit), Noah, Michael & David (Modern), Moses and the Burning bush, The Ascension, High priest entering the Holy of Holies, Elijah in his chariot, Sundial of Ahaz ("The sun going up by 10 degrees"), Translation of Enoch, Christ in Majesty, Consecration of Aaron & his sons (left hand), Moses and Jethro (right hand), and Moses receiving the Tablets of the Law ("In darkening clouds and flashing fire the law is the spirit").

It is thought that about three different makers were involved under one designer.

The old glass dates from 1200-1207, however there are many modern insertions, for example The Crucifixion was made by Austin in 1853.
