Summary
[edit]DescriptionCanongate Tolbooth - geograph.org.uk - 1336771.jpg |
English: Founded by a charter granted by David I to the canons of Holyrood Abbey in 1143, the Canongate remained a separate burgh until its merger with Edinburgh in 1856. Its tolbooth served as a council meeting house, courthouse and prison. The present building, erected in 1591 (with Victorian embellishments), now serves as an extension to Huntly House, the city museum on the opposite side of the road. |
