Title
Cannon ball of probable post medieval date (1500 - 1700).
Description
English: Cannon ball of probable post medieval date (1500 - 1700).

The cannon ball is sub-spherical with a diameter of 49.5mm. It weighs 664 grams (1lb 7¼ ozs). It is made of either lead or lead alloy which has been presumably cast; although no casting flanges are present. The surface of the cannon ball has a number of dents and scrapes. These may have been formed through use, however they seem to be regular and the cannon ball may have been trimmed. However, this trimming might have been a result of recycling.

The ball is of a mid grey white colour with small areas of slight flaking and active corrosion. There is also some evidence of mineralisation build up on some areas; specifically a large amount of iron staining. This could come either form the natural (wet) depositional environment or from iron artefacts whose corrosion (rust) has discoloured the cannon ball in the ground.

Found with the cannon ball were a number of well cast tokens (HESH-E5ECA0, HESH-E61942, HESH-E639B8, HESH-E651C8, HESH-E65DF2, HESH-E67611) and an open stone mould for making them (HESH-E487F2). Also found with these were a number of lead waste and poorly cast tokens (HESH-0A0041). This group could be interpreted as a metalworkers or token makers assemblage with both used (and recycled) tokens as well as a large amount of recycled or scrap lead. Similar tokens are often found and are dated to the post-medieval period (1500 - 1700)
