Summary
[edit]DescriptionCandy Factory Lofts, World’s Fair Park Drive, Knoxville, TN - 52473939620.jpg |
English: Built circa 1916, this former Candy Factory was built for the South, Littlefield & Steere Company, which operated in the building until 1933. The building later was utilized as a warehouse for Miller’s Department Store by the mid-1940s, with the building being purchased by the Knoxville Community Development Corporation in the 1970s, which renovated the building to serve as a candy factory and an arts complex housing gallery and rehearsal spaces as well as offices for the 1982 World’s Fair. Following the fair, the building was adaptively reused as a condominium complex. The building features a red brick exterior, large Chicago-style windows, buff brick pilasters and accents at the fifth floor, balconies on the east and west facades, a decorative surround with stone trim, a gabled parapet, and doric columns at the location of the original Clinch Avenue front entrance to the building, brick reveals framing the windows on the second, third, and fourth floors, a modern curtain wall-clad addition on the east facade that partially fills in a former light court, and a semi-public plaza on the west side of the building. The building is presently known as the Candy Factory Lofts, and also houses a retail space on the south end of the first floor. |
