Title
Candlestick of post-medieval date
Description
English: A cast copper alloy 'latten' candlestick dating to the 16th century to early 17th century. This example is incomplete having lost its lower 'drip tray' base. The stem of the candlestick has a single ring moulding on the mid point of the circular sectioned shaft. The moulding is faceted and the edges are bi-convex. At the base of the stem another circular moulding is present which would have fitted to the basal tray. Beneath the moulding the stem flares slightly. The upper part of the stem expands to a cylindrical bowl. The bowl has two raised bands between grooves encircling it, one just below the mouth and the other half way down. A slight rectangular notch has been cut in the upper edge of the bowl; it is likely to facilitate the cleaning removing of the wax candle. The candlestick is a mid brown colour with a polished patina; the surface is encrusted with an iron corrosion, presumably from soil conditions. A very similar example is illustrated by Egan (2005:81, no.337) dated to c.1525-1650 AD although he notes that the form is long lived and occurs in deposits in London throughout the 16th and early 17th centuries.

The candlestick measures 123.6mm long and 24.6mm in diameter at the bowl, 13.9mm diameter at the stem; it weighs 113.43 grams.
