Title
Candle snuffer re-sized
Description
English: Incomplete copper-alloy wick trimmer, also known as a candle snuffer. It is 95mm in length and comprises two parts joined together with a separate copper-alloy bar which allows both parts free to move through 360 degrees.

The shorter of the two arms is 36mm long, 2mm thick and 8mm wide, tapering to a point where a 29x17mm piece of copper alloy with a central ring-and-dot is set at 90 degrees to it. The two are made in one piece, cut out of one L-shaped piece of sheet and bent to shape.

The longer of the two arms is 58mm long and appears to be a handle. It has three holes, one containing the hinge bar and centrally placed at a slightly narrower end. The other two small circular holes are both close to one long edge; the one close to the centre of the object has broken through this edge. The other is in the corner furthest from the hinge.

The decorated plate looks very like the cover from a pair of candle-snuffers, with the other holes probably being for the attachment of the box to hold the trimmed snuff. Compare HAMP-917D56. Early post-medieval, probably 17th or 18th century.
