Hadley Falls Canal Park in South Hadley MA - contemporary summer view up river from the observation deck overlooking the South Hadley Canal and the Connecticut River. The historic South Hadley Canal (1795) was the first commercially successful canal in the US. It was a hand dug canal that bypassed Connecticut River rapids and facilitated the residential and commercial development of the up stream Connecticut River Valley. Until 1805, an ingenious water-powered Inclined Plane was used to raise and lower flat bottomed canal boats within the canal over the river rapids 52 foot drop in the river. After 1805 and until 1847, a series of locks were installed to raise and lower water level in the 2 1/2 mile long canal. Water flow was regulated by a series of wing dams that directed water into the canal. Today, the Town of South Hadley though the activities of its Canal Park Committee: • Monitors the maintenance and safety of the Bicentennial Canal Park and periodically report conditions as such to the Selectboard. • Documents and publicizes the historical importance of the South Hadley Canal. • Advocates for the protection, conservation, and preservation of the remains of the old canal bed, locks, and gatehouses along its entire length. • Develops the park’s potential as a recreational and significantly unique educational attraction for residents and visitors.
