Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Canal "crossroad" Looking along the course of the Stroudwater Canal across the Gloucester Sharpness Canal. When the Stroudwater Canal was first built it ran directly from the River Severn (behind the photographer) up to the Stroud Valley, bringing coal from the Forest of Dean to the mills. When, many years later the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal was built it was arranged to cross the older canal on the level, with the lock in the foreground allowing the older canal to continue towards the River Severn. In time traffic via the much bigger ports at Gloucester and Sharpness dominated and the stub of the Stroudwater Canal linking to the Severn was abandoned.
