This is the centre of the manufactureof iron and steel goods of all kinds (Map 41 in Atlas). An adjoiningcoal field supplies the fuel, and formerly there was an abundanceof iron ore near at hand, but now the iron ore is chiefly imported.Sheffield, farther north, a city about the size of Toronto is chieflynoted for the making of cutlery and fine cutting tools of all kinds(Fig. 181). Coal, iron, water-power, and rock material for themaking of grindstones are found in the neighbourhood, and un-doubtedly the latter, which is so necessary for putting edges ontools, is partly responsible for the special line of manufacturingdeveloped in this district.
