Wo. 274 The Importance of theGrinding Wheel in Knife Grinding One of the most important factors inkeeping the edges of high-speed steelknives in good condition and in preservingthe life of the knives is the selection ofgrinding wheels of the correct grain andgrade. Many of the common troubles,such as cracking and checking of theedges, may be avoided if the right wheelis properly used. . The grinding wheel should be of agrain and grade which will cut freelyand rapidly with very little dressing andyet maintain its shape. The speed shouldnot exceed 5,000 s.f.p.m. A wheel oper-ated at too high a speed acts hard anddevelops the tendency toward glazing anddulling over. On the modern knife grinding machines2630 or 2636, grades J or K, Alundumvitrified wheels will be found almost uni-versally satisfactory. Very
