t is evident thatfew, if any, of the higher-class tea-producinggardens maintain a high standard of qualityafter three years from their first bearing, andyear by year they decline into producing only .common and medium teas. At present nevground is continually being opened up, so acertain fresh supply of fine teas continues tocome forward; but the common invoiceslargely increase month by month, many be-ing from gardens conspicuous three or fouryears ago for the fineness of their teas. Thisbeing so, the Chinese, if they look out, mayyet have another innings. They will havetime to replant, modernise their workings,learn to use machinery, get free from exporttaxes; and in a few years hence, when, pos-sibly, Ceylon teas may not be regarded withthe favor which they enjoy to-day, theChinese may be ready to bring some newly-grown young China leaf of fine quality and atreasonable prices to compete with their lateformidable rivals.—Financial News.
