Summary
[edit]DescriptionCanada Road - geograph.org.uk - 1213313.jpg |
English: Canada Road. On the map this straight metalled track is marked as running most of the way from East Surrey Hospital to Maple Farm near South Nutfield, and would appear to be a useful cycle track. However, halfway along access is blocked by a tall metal gate. The buildings in the background are part of the East Surrey Hospital complex.
The history of this track is that it was built in September 1940 by a Canadian Army construction team as part of an intended bypass of Reigate and Redhill. Improvements were made to linking roads at either end, although with no useful route beyond the A217 at Woodhatch, it could not have realistically served as a bypass for Reigate. Just off the line of the route, where the East Surrey Hospital now stands, was a camp used by Canadian troops, which would have benefited from the new road, hence the name of the access road to the hospital, Canada Avenue. See 1762163 and 1762234 for further stretches of the same road. |
