.The principal agricultural crops are hay, oats, wheat,turnips and potatoes, with smaller proportions of barley,peas, buckwheat and rye. The trade in cattle, sheep andswine, is large, but could be considerably increased withgreat advantage to the farmers. Increased attention hasbeen given during the past few years to the dairy indus-try, and a number of cheese and butter factories havebeen established. Fruit growing has developed during the past ten orfifteen years to a remarkable degree. The Annapolis andCornwallis valleys are especially adapted, by soil, climateand situation, for the growth of fruits of high quality,and the choicest sorts of apples, pears, plums and cher-ries are produced there in abundance. Most of the smallfruits also succeed well. The excellent flavour and goodkeeping qualities of the apples grown in Nova Scotiahave won for them a high reputation in the Europeanmarket. They have more than onceamounted to above a half million barrels a year. Manynew orchards have been recently planted, but there arestill very large areas of land in these favoured valleyswell adapted for orchard purposes. The nearness to theseaboard, the milder climate, and the facilities for ship-ping to Europe make it practicable to send apples fromhere at almost any time during the winter, when thisfruit commands the highest prices. Cranberries are alsogrown in large quantities. There is a school of horticulture associated with theAcadia University supported by government grants. New Brunswick has an area of28,000 square miles and a population Farming in01 331,000. About half is in wood- New Brunswick,land. Of the 17,863,000 acres of theprovince 4,443,400 are occupied, and of this 1,897,417 acresare under crop, 689,681
