lumber of Northern Europe provided an unfailing andprofitable return freight for the shipping thus engaged.When, however, the troubles of the Napoleonic era be-gan, and especially when the continental blockade wasenforced, the lumber supplies of the Baltic became un-certain and insufficient. It was then that the lumberimporters of Great Britain turned their attention to theNorth American colonies, and found there not only allthe lumber they required, but occupation for the vastfleet of vessels lying unemployed in their harbors. Thusv/e find that, while in the year 1800 only some 2,600 loads,equal to 52 tons, of lumber reached Great Britain, in1810 there were 125,300 loads, and in 1820 about 308,000loads.
