Summary
[edit]DescriptionCampodus variabilis (fossil shark tooth spiral) (Upper Pennsylvanian; Cass County, Nebraska, USA) 1.jpg |
English: Campodus variabilis (Newberry & Worthen, 1870) - fossil shark teeth from the Late Pennsylvanian of Nebraska, USA. (public display, Nebraska State Museum of Natural History, Lincoln, Nebraska, USA)
This species is also known as Agassizodus variabilis. Some Late Paleozoic sharks were remarkable in having tooth whorls or spirals (see especially Helicoprion - www.flickr.com/photos/jsjgeology/15336310205). From museum signage: "Tooth spiral from an extinct shell-crushing shark. Unlike modern sharks, Campodus and its relatives bit with large teeth at the front rather than the sides of the jaws." Classification: Animalia, Chordata, Vertebrata, Chondrichthyes, Eugeneodontidae, Helicoprionidae/Agassizodontidae Locality: unrecorded/undisclosed site in Cass County, southeastern Nebraska, USA |
