Description

Este conjunto de sete estátuas com cerca de cinco metros são erguidas fora da área urbana, em S. Torcato a 4,8 km do centro da cidade, no Campo da Ataca onde, segundo a tradição oral de várias gerações se terá iniciado a Batalha de São Mamede, que teve início em 24 de Junho de 1128. Batalha na qual D. Afonso Henriques conquistou a chefia do Condado Portucalense e iniciou o processo político da independência de Portugal, ao afastar a tentativa de hegemonia galega, marcando assim esse dia como o primeiro de Portugal. Não deixa de ser significativo que o nome do lugar seja o de "Campo da Ataca" - ou do ataque - designação guerreira bem sugestiva.

O arranjo deste campo foi feito, sob proposta do Prof. Doutor Freitas do Amaral, pela Câmara Municipal de Guimarães, por ocasião do II Congresso Histórico de Guimarães, dedicado ao Estudo de "D. Afonso Henriques e a sua Época".
