Description
English: Campo del Cielo meteorite, El Chaco fragment.
Español: El meteorito El Chaco o Chaco es el mayor fragmento conocido del meteorito Campo del Cielo que impactó en la región denominada Campo del Cielo, a 12 kilómetros de la localidad de Gancedo, en la actual provincia del Chaco, Argentina. Los cálculos de carbono 14 sítuan la caída entre los años 2080 y 1910 a. C. Su cráter fue descubierto en 1969 por Raul Gómez, un habitante de la zona. La excavación fue dirigida hasta 1972 por William Cassidy, un astrónomo de la NASA que desde el años 1962 realiza investigaciones en el lugar. En 1980 La Fuerza Aérea Argentina desentierra e iza fuera del cráter al gran meteorito. Con un peso aproximado de 37 toneladas es el segundo meteorito de mayor masa que se conoce.
