Looking back upon it with a perspective of 3,000miles, I am tempted to regard MacDougal Pass as oneof the wonderful manifestations of our trip. Hundredsof books of travel have been written about far less thanwas unfolded before us on that memorable twelfth ofNovember and the early hours of the following day. As to water, we must carryas much as possible, and within thirty-six hours reach therumoured tank in the lava country in order to getmore. Mr. Daniels was sure that by swinging around monu-ment No. 180 as if it were a pivot, and striking south closealong the western edge of the lava beds, we could take ourwhole outfit southward for several miles; and that is whatwe proceeded to do.
