are the buildings of the Weather Bureau, the Commissary Depart-ment and the Barns. The west walk leads towards the Terraces, by the storeand post-office, the Cottage Hotel, the curio shops and residences of otherPark people, and at the end of the walk, close to the Formation at the foot ofthe gulch, is the house that Jim McCartney built, the first house of the Parkand dignified by the title of the first hotel, for Jim took in boarders. After luncheon at the hotel the head porter announces guides ready forthe Formation. The Formation means that sandy waste around the hotsprings and geysers. You may ride or walk; if you ride, the driver is yourguide. I may say here that none of these rides to formations and other attrac-tions in the Park are included in the transportation ticket. The guide accom-panying those who walk is dependent on the fees he may receive fox^ his ser-vices, as no specific charge is made. The waters ofthe hot springs areclear as crystal, yetthe depths give outthe most exquisitecreams, browns andgreens. In one ofthe smaller, shallowsprings articles ofiron or brass, as can-dlesticks, horseshoes,inkstands, etc., areplaced in the waterthat within twenty-four to thirty-sixhours covers themwith a thick coatingof sparkling crystals;these are offered assouvenirs in the littlestores below.
