ernment control, Sep-tember 19, 1870, after his companions had discussed private ownershiparound the camp fire; his suggestion was published November 9, 1870. 72 1871- CONCORD COACHES. -The first official, governmental expedition, under Dr. F. V. Hayden, entered the Park via Mammoth Hot Springs and discovered the famous Terraces. The first boat launched on the waters of Lake Yellowstone, the Annie. Used by the Hayden Expedition. Bill introduced in the House of Congress by the Hon. W. H. Clagett delegate from Montana, and in the Senate by Senator Pomeroy of Congress, on December 18th. The first house in the Park was built by Jim McCartney; it was also the first hotel, as it was built for the entertainment of visitors. Ihe house still stands at the foot of the gulch west of Liberty Cap. Jack Baronett built the first bridge over the Yellowstone River near Yanceys. He, Yancey, built his house the same year. Marshall came to the Lower Basin and built three log shacks for use as a hotel. 73

The suc-cess of the billwas largelydue to theefforts ofMessrs. N. P.Langford, Cor-nelius Hedgesand WilliamH. Clagett.Gen. John A.Gibbon ex-plored a por-tion of the Park. Norris Geyser Basin discovered by E. S. Topping and DwightWoodruff from the summit of Bunsen Peak, and visited the followingday by Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Stone of Bozeman, Montana. Mrs. Stonewas the first white woman to tour the Park. 1873—Capt. W. A. Jones, U. S. A., Engineer Corps, made an extended tourof the Park. He was the first to find a way to cross the AbsarokaRange. 1875—Gen. W W. Belknap, Secretary of War, with Lieut. G. C. Doane,Gen. W. S. Strong and others, made a journey through the Park.Capt. Wm. Ludlow of the Engineers Corps made the first accuratemeasurement of the Yellowstone Falls. 1
