A worknamed Fort Heiman was begun on the bluff on the oppositeside of the river, but was incomplete. General McClernand, commanding the advance, landedeight miles below the foi-t. General Grant made a recou-noissance in one of the gunboats to di-aw the fire of the fortand ascertain the range of its guns. Having accomplishedthis, he re-embarked the landed troops, and debarked onFebruaiy 4th, at Baileys Ferry, three miles below the fortand just out of range of its fire. The river overflowed itsbanks, much of the country was under water; a heavy rainfell. The entire command did not get ashore till in thenight of the 5th. In the night. General C. F. Smith was FORT HENRY. 29 sent across the river to take Fort Heiman, but it was evacu-ated while Grant was landing his force at Baileys Ferry.McClernand was ordered to move out at eleven oclock in A. A. Quarters

General Tilghman had telegraphed for reinforcements, 30 FROM FORT HENRY TO CORINTH. and had about tliirty-fotir Inindred men with him, but onlyone company of artillerists. At midnight of the 5th he tele-giaphed to General A. S. Johnston that Grant was intrench-ing at Baileys Ferry. But, on the morning of the 6th,Tilghman gave up the idea of using his infantry in the de-fence, ordered Colonel Heiman to move the command toFort Donelson, while he remained with the company of ar-tillerists to engage the fleet and the land force, if it shouldappear, with the heavy armament of the fort, and thus retardpursuit. At eleven oclock in the morning of the 6th, General Grantmoved with his command, and at the same time Commo-dore Foote steamed up the river with his fleet in two divi-sions.
