Watercolour by Second Lieutenant William Thomas Markham (1830-1886), 2nd Battalion, Rifle Brigade, 1854 (c).

Soldiers from the Rifle Brigade stand outside their tents on a hilltop overlooking the sea. Gallipoli became a major encampment for British and French forces during the Crimean War (1854-1856) and its harbour was used as a stopping-off point on the way to Constantinople.
