Tom Rids-dale, and obviously it meant something. Butwhat it meant did not appear. But shootingmakes a noise and attracts attention. Tom didnot want to attract attention. About two oclock in the afternoon, Tom care-fully reconnoitered a spot where great blocks ofstone had fallen from cliffs above to a ledge belowlying loosely there and making small caverns.Having satisfied himself that neither human habi-tation nor any human being was within miles ofthis little hiding place, Tom collected some sticksand built a little fire in one of the crevices betweenthe great blocks of stone. Here, he cooked andate his remaining piece of bear beef. Then heopened his blanket, rolled himself in it, and dis-posed himself to sleep, in a half sitting, half lyingposture with his head and shoulders restingagainst the rock. He felt a hand pulling at his blanket. IN THE HIGH MOUNTAINS freeze to death, and it would never do to build afire up here at night, when it could be seen formiles away.* Healthy boy that he was, he fell almost imme-diately into slumber, and it was nightfall whenhe woke. He took the risk of throwing two orthree small sticks on his well-hidden fire, in orderto broil one of his partridges for his supper. Thatdone, he repacked his blanket, took up his gun,and set out again on his search for that some-thing for which he had been looking all day. All night long Tom toiled about, up and downhills, over rocks and cliffs, through snow thatwas now beginning to soften as the weather wasgrowing milder, but the search resulted in noth-ing. When morning came, the well-nigh ex-hausted boy sought out what seemed a safe spotfor the purpose, created a little fire, cooked threepartridges and ate them, seasoning them with alittle salt which he always, on his hunting trips,carried in a little India rubbe
