Summary
[edit]DescriptionCambusnethan.jpg |
English: Cambusnethan Priory: Gothic Building with pseudo ecclesiastical features. A fire and vandalism later have taken a toll on this building. Designed by James Gillespie and completed roughly in 1825. Sits above the River Clyde, enjoying enchanting views of the Clyde Valley. It was built for the Lockharts of Castlehill, whose crest was etched into every balustrade as well as its main hall. This crest still survives at the Lockhart Estate's bridge along the Clyde Valley (the A72) scenic route to Lanark, and consists of a lock, casket and a heart, as one of the Lockhart ancestors was a bearer of Robert the Bruce's heart to the Holy Lands, and had carried The Bruce's heart strung around his neck inside a casket. The family's original name was "Loccard", but after the Bruce's heart was brought back and buried in Melrose Abbey, their name was changed to, "Lockhart". One of the few remaining Gothic styled mansions still standing in Scotland. |
