Something of the kind probablydid happen, though Mr. Gosses version is in somerespects clearly inaccurate.^ Anyhow, we may believethat Gray keenly felt the indignity, and he justifiablyresented the disregard of the incident by the Master,who called it a boyish frolic He transferred him-self to Pembroke, where, as he tells Wharton, he was 1 Mr. Gosse makes the poet hook his rope to the bar : butthere are several bars, and they are not adapted to the purpose ;moreover, they are outside the window, not inside, as Grays letterswould make us suppose that they should be. )\Ir. Gosse has takenhis tale from a silly book, published, many years after the supposedincident, by a Scotchman who knew nothing of Cambridge, anddid not pretend that his story was more than a jest.

In the old home of Spenserand Andrewes poetry and learning were still honoured.The chambers allotted to him were in the interior court,on the first floor of Sir Robert Hitchams picturesquebuilding, erected in 1659, and adjoined the dais endof the hall. They were afterwards occupied by WilliamPitt. Southwards the poets rooms overlooked whatwas then the fellows garden and the garden of thelodge. The latter is said to have been very beautifulin Grays time. It contained a sheet of water, whereonthe eccentric Master of that time, Roger Long, used todivert himself on a water-velocipede, to the amusementof Gray and the undergraduates. The same highand mighty Prince Roger, surnamed the Long, Lord ofthe Great Zodiack, the Glass Uranium, and the Chariotthat goes without Horses, also erected, on the side ofthe court op
