Summary
[edit]DescriptionCalima in the Canary Islands (Copernicus).jpg |
English: A Saharan dust storm episode, also known as Calima in the Canary Islands, is currently sweeping across the eastern Atlantic Ocean and having a significant impact on the air quality in the archipelago. According to the latest updates from the Spanish Agency of Meteorology (AEMET), a yellow alert remains in force for the Canary Islands. During Calima situations, dry and gusty winds can pick up small particles and carry them over long distances, affecting air quality, visibility, and even weather patterns in nearby regions. To support environmental management and public health efforts worldwide, the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service provides global monitoring and forecasting of air quality, and valuable insights into the composition and condition of the atmosphere. In this image acquired by one of Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellites, the strong winds of the Saharan Storms can be seen carrying plumes of dust through the Atlantic Ocean and to the Canary Island on 7 October. |
