ge, and among them. San Gabriel is entitled to promi-nence. Time has treated it kindly. At the eastern end is an archcontaining the chime of six bells, still calling devotees to service. Its towers saw no civilized dwelling place at their building, andthe time-scarred wall and well-worn entrance speak of ancientyears. The landmark of an earlier civilization with mission mostpeaceful, San Gabriel is worth a lingering inspection./viomtr After San Gabriel are passed Rosemead, Savanna andmUNlfc, then Monte, where the Baptists founded their firstSouthern California church. It is in the moist lands, has threecreameries, and ships to an eager market large quantities of cauli-flower and other vegetables. From Bassett are two routes to Po-mona, the older via Puente, Lemon and Spadra, through a grainhay and oil country, and the newer to the northward through arich horticultural district. The way to the north leads throughthe gardens of Vineland and Trwindale to Covina. 24 miles fromLo« Angeles.

Inorange shipments during the season of 1899-1900 it ranked thirdin the state with some 850 carloads, and modestly says little eitherof that or of its large returns from deciduous fruits and agricul-ture. There is a growing suspicion that the good people ofCovina are quietly getting rich without taking the outside worldinto their business confidence. It is acquiring metropolitan airs, and is destined to be one of the largest of the interior SouthernCalifornia cities. Four miles farther east is San Dimas, a smallerSAN DlflAS edition of Covina. It possesses scenic advantages, including a romantic waterfall. On the material side prosperityis shown in a fine packing house, a sign of the times at all thefruit colony stations. Lordsburg is a Dunkard settlement with a newLUKUbKUKU broom air, neatness and thrift being evidenteverywhere. Sheer force of great advantages has added
