BLACK-SPOTTED TROUT IN ULUE LAKE 23 Upper Blue Tjake afforded an unusually favorable opportunit.y for studying the spawning runs of this trout. It presented the novel situa- tion of an essentially pure stock, under almost virgin conditions, exco))t for the affects of artificial propagation. The lake liad been closed to lishing since 1984. Upstream ti'aps on the tributai'ies made possible the accurate enumeration and study of the fish in the annual spawning migra- tion. Moreover, the lake had been used in the past as an egg-taking station by the California Division of Fish and Game, and some informa- tion on the size of the spawning runs was available going back as far as 1934. Description of Upper Blue Lake and Its Tributary Streams Upper Blue Lake will for the sake of convenience hereafter be referred to simply as Blue Lake. Lying above Lower Blue Lake, it forms one of the headwaters of the North Fork of the Mokelumne River. It is located in Alpine County, California, 20 miles south of Lake Tahoe, at an elevation of 8,130 feet. It is about a mile long and half as wide,
