We met hereseveral invalids, who spoke most enthusiasti-cally of the health-restoring properties of theplace. They told us how they had stopped atThomasville, the Hot Springs, at Las Vegas,Pasadena, and other places, of how they hadsuffered there in one way or the other, andadded that after they arrived in Monterey,and had been there a few days, they felt as ifthey were on the sure road to health. Every- Monterey 57 thing at this place tends to make one feelcheerful and hopeful. We noticed that thenumber of healthy people far exceeded thecontingent of invalids, which is a very impor-tant factor in the cure of disease, and therewere none of those depressing surroundingswhich are so often met with at the regularhealth resorts.
