English: Members of the California Army National Guard's search and extraction team, a part of the 579th Engineering Battalion's Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear unit, carry a civilian to a decontamination area Nov. 4 during the 2011 Arizona Statewide Vigilant Guard Exercise in Phoenix. Shown are Air Force Tech. Sgt. Eliza Villa, 144th Fighter Wing, California Air National Guard, and Pvts. Joe Freitas and Garth Rozzano, 235th Engineer Company, 579th Engineer Battalion, 49th Military Police Brigade, California Army National Guard. Not shown: Sgt. Kyle Jordan, 235th. The exercise is designed to enhance the California National Guard’s disaster response capabilities to devastating state emergencies such as an improvised nuclear device detonation. Vigilant Guard is preparing the 49th Military Police Brigade to assume the role as the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Region IX military disaster coordinator, or Homeland Response Force asset.
