Summary
[edit]DescriptionCaledonian pub (deceased) and Haymarket station - geograph.org.uk - 1005183.jpg |
English: Caledonian pub (deceased) and Haymarket station Taken from Haymarket station car park, the building left of centre was the very recently dead and since totally demolished Caledonian Ale House; it had in fact closed only about twelve hours earlier since its site was required for a ramp taking Edinburgh's new tram line down from street level in Haymarket Terrace, near the top of the steps, to run alongside the railway west of Haymarket station, the rear of the main building of which is on the right. When this station opened in 1842 it was terminus of the main line from Glasgow and if the photographer had been around at the time he would have been standing on the original platforms; note the blocked doorway second from the left on the street-level floor, from which a flight of stairs would have descended. When the line was extended to Waverley station in 1847, the new platforms were to the right of the building and were reached by a footbridge, which debouched from the large blocked rectangle above the white pipe on the extreme right. |
