Caleb Knapp was admitted Freeman at Stamford in 1669/1671. His will was made November 10, 1674 and says: "I give unto Abigail Smith, my minor sister-in-law, my wife Hannah and unto my small children, namely, Caleb-John-Moses-Samuel-Sarah-Hannah, etc., and implore my beloved friends, Joshua Knapp, John Hody, Daniel Wistell and Moses Knapp, witnesses." His inventory was taken by William Newman and Jonathan Sellick, September 9, 1774/1775, amounting to 179 pounds, 16 shillings and 4 pence. (See Fairfield Probate Records, Vol. 1675-1669, page 36). In his father's will he is called "John Caleb." He was probably a weaver by trade as his father left him his "loom and half of the gears." His wife, Hannah Smith was daughter of Dr. Henry Smith of Stamford and Wethersfield who was born in England circa 1612/1619. His 1st wife, whose name is unknown, was mother of all his children. He married second Ann __________. A Henry Smith, age 22, and Ann Jackson, age 23, came to New England, July 27, 1635 on the ship "Princessa". After Caleb's death his widow married Thomas Lawrence before July 9, 1666, of Stamford. (Fairfield Probate Records. Vol. 1675- 1686, p. 239) Henry Smith, father of Hannah, made his will July 4, 1687 at Stamford. He mentions "grandson John Knap" and "daughter Hannah Lorance" etc. In Vol. 1689-1701, p. 98, Thomas Lawrence of Stamford, made his will, dated July 26, 1691, mentions a "daughter-in-law, Hannah Knapp", and "son-in-law Samuel Knapp" (meaning step-daughter and step-son). The inventory of Thomas Lawrence's estate, who died June 16, 1691, taken September 16, 1691 says: "John Knapp, having ye knowing of this inventory, being son-in-law to ye deceased. and having these things, most of them under his custody" (meaning step-son. Henry Smith's wife, Ann. died June 1685.
