Description

FROM CALCUTTA TO CAPE TOWN.

We see here the 2nd King's Royal Rifles enjoying an early al fresco breakfast on the morning of their embarkation for South Africa, It was in response to the urgent representations of the Governor of Natal at the beginning of September, 1899, as to the insufficiently protected state of that Colony, that the Home Government decided to send reinforcements from India. The Indian contingent consisted of the 5th Dragoon Guards, the 9th Lancers, the 7th Hussars, the 1st Devonshires, the 1st Gloucesters, the 2nd Gordon Highlanders, and the 2nd King's Royal Rifles, together with the 42nd, 51st, and 53rd batteries of Field Artillery- Its arrival late in September raised the total number of our troops in South Africa to 22,000 men.
