Description

49-year-old male on chronic dialysis and secondary hyperparathyroidism presented with a mass on the buttock thought to be an abscess. The surgeon was not able to drain it completely so excised the whole thing. The gross specimen was a 7 x 6 x 3 cm mass that had the consistency of a soggy but crunchy sponge. On section, the cystic locules exuded copious amount of pink, opaque fluid that resembled Pepto-Bismol. The fluid, washed away, left this multilocular cystic mass.

As best as I interpret the literature, the term "tumoral calcinosis" is to be reserved for the idiopathic condition that has similar morphology but occurs in younger people without renal failure or other condition characterized by systemic derangement of calcium metabolism.
