The images of the Calbuco eruption were not only spectacular on the ground, but also from space. Here are the MODIS RGB and OMPS AI over MODIS RGB images from yesterday: The largest AI value for this cloud was 29.3; that's one of the largest (if not the largest) aerosol index measurement I've seen from any of the BUV instruments. Here's an image, in another color scale, showing the unsmoothed measurements for each of the individual fields-of-view (FOVs): Each FOV is outlined in gray, and the time (in UTC) of the measurements is given to the right of the orbital swath. And, here's another image where I set the scale to go from 0 to 15, where the center of the cloud "saturates": You can see from the images that, so far, the ash cloud has not dispersed that much; the boundary between very dense ash and no ash is quite sharp. Now let's see where the cloud goes over the next few days! |
