Summary
[edit]DescriptionCalamites (fossil plant) (Breathitt Group, Middle Pennsylvanian; Jackson North Outcrop - Rt. 15 roadcut, Breathitt County, Kentucky, USA) 1.jpg |
English: Calamites - fossil plant stem from the Pennsylvanian of Kentucky, USA. (~6.4 centimeters across at its widest)
Seen here is a Calamites pith cast. The central portion of an ancient sphenophyte stem has been filled with sediments - in this case, sand. This fossil preservation style is called a cast. The black material is carbonized plant matter. The sphenophytes are a group of plants with only one surviving genus in the Holocene - Equisetum. Calamites is an easily-recognizable stem genus - it consists of a longitudinally-ridged axis having regularly-spaced nodes (see elsewhere in this photo album). Classification: Plantae, Sphenophyta, Equisetales, Calamitaceae Stratigraphy: construction talus from the Hyden Formation or Pikeville Formation, Breathitt Group, Middle Pennsylvanian Locality: construction rubble from Jackson North outcrop - large roadcut on the eastern side of new Rt. 15, just south of the southbound old Rt. 15-new Rt. 15 split, north of the town of Jackson, north-central Breathitt County, eastern Kentucky, USA (~37° 34’ 53.95” North latitude, ~83° 23’ 07.99” West longitude) |
