| Description |
English: Cairngorm Reindeer Herd Reindeer became extinct in Scotland in the 12th century but the Duke of Atholl in the 18th century and earl of Mar in 1820 attempted a reintroduction. Unfortunately they were unsuccessful. However, in 1954 a small herd was brought from Swedish Lappland and allowed to roam free on the northern slopes of Cairngorm. Under the care of a Lapp, Mickel Utsi, this herd has thrived and greatly multiplied and is now a popular tourist attraction in a fenced area to the west of the road up to the Cairngorm ski centre. |
