Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Cadbury Castle, South Cadbury, Somerset, 26 July 2015. Also known as Camalet and associated in myth with King Arthur. Originally a Bronze Age Hill Fort but mainly developed as an Iron Age Hill Fort c.400 BC. Resistence against the Roman invasion by the Durotriges and Dubonni resulted in the fort's destruction by Vespasian's 2nd Augusta Legion c.70 AD. The Romans then built a barracks on the site which eventually became a Romano-British settlement in the 2nd & 3rd Centuries AD. Following the Romans' departure from Britannia, the hill was refortified as the main 'caer' of a major Brythonic chief and his 'teulu' (warband), being used 470-580 AD in defence of Dumnonia against Saxon invaders. However, the Saxons eventually occupied the site and built a mint here 1010-1020. Following the Norman invasion, it may again have been used by the Normans as a fortification for a short time before final abandonment.
