Summary

[edit]
Description

A cabinet by Eugene Schoen on display as part of the "Jazz Age" exhibit at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States.

Schoen (1880-1957) was an American cabinetmaker who studied architecture in Vienna in the early 1900s and visited the 1925 Exposition des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris. His designs reflect the influence of Art Deco and the industrial straight lines of Le Corbusier, but he mixes modern man-made materials with luxury woods and metals.

This 1930 cabinet is made of Thuja burls, primavera, and Coromandel ebony. The Thuja is a coniferous tree in the cypress family. Primavera (Roseodendron donnell-smithii), or "white mahogany", is a deciduous tree from Central America. Coromandel ebony is also known as East Indian ebony.

A burl is an abnormal, bulbous growth on a tree. It is usually caused by disease, fungus, or injury. Burls have swirling rather than straight grain, and are prized by furniture manufacturers.

Although designed by Schoen, this cabinet was made by Schmeig, Hungate and Kotzian (est. 1908), a New York City furniture manufacturer.
