Summary

[edit]
Description
English: CSIRO and collaborators are evaluating the use of 'primer' plants as a strategy to improve soil for later crops. The roots of primer species such as Lucerne are able to survive in subsoils that are hostile to root growth, and research shows that they are able to modify the soil to provide a more benign environment for root growth of following crops. Trials indicate that pasture species such as chicory, sulla and some perennial grasses also show promise as possible primer plants.
