COVID-19 Intubation Safety Box, personal protective equipment (PPE) produced by Ascalon Studios, Inc.

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Intensive Care Unit (ICU) physicians from Virtua Memorial Hospital in Mount Holly, New Jersey (USA) practice using a COVID-19 Intubation Safety Box manufactured by Ascalon Studios, Inc. An innovative makeshift personal protective equipment (PPE) device, the box was originally developed by Taiwanese doctors in the light of the shortage of PPE facing hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. Taking the form of an acrylic cube with flap-covered hand holes, the box is placed over an infected patient during the course of intubation and extubation in order to minimize healthcare worker contact with infected droplets that emanate during the process. The evolving designs have been part of an open source design initiative in which manufacturers, such as Ascalon Studios, retooled their facilities in order to produce the device to donate to hospitals throughout their geographic regions.
